Frequently Asked Questions

We thought we'd put together a list of questions we often get asked on our Facebook page and in our videos.

Are your real names Cubbee and CK ?  No, they are not our real names.  They are names we use on ATV forums on line.  CK stands for Canadian Kodiak but somehow you guys have shortened it.

Do you guys have clutch kits in the Yamahas?  No, the Kodiak is stock and the Grizzly only has 1.5mm shims in the primary clutch.

How do you like your Zillas and what size are they? The Grizzly has 27X9X12 and 27X11X12 and the Kodiak has 26X9X12 and 26X11X12 and we  LOVE them.  So far so good!

What kind of dogs do you have and what are their names?  German Shorthaired Pointers.  Jethro and Oliver.

What size are your quads?  The Grizzly is a 700 and the Kodiak is a 450

What kind of GPS do you have and how do you mount it?  Cubbee uses a Garmin 62S with a RAM Mount and CK uses a Garmin 60CSX with a RAM Mount. You can check them out here:
Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx Handheld GPS Navigator

Do you like your SPOT CONNECT?  For sure!  Lots of places we ride do not have cell phone coverage.  SPOT let's people track our adventures in almost real time and lets us post on the trail updates directly to FACEBOOK.  The most important feature of SPOT though is if you need help in an emergency just push the button and help will come! Find it here: SPOT Connect Smartphone Satellite Communicator We also use a RAM mount to secure the CONNECT to the quad.
RAM Mount Cradle Holder f/Spot Connect and Satellite Communicator

How do you talk to each other out on the trails?  SENA Bluetooth Helmet communicator's.  The SMH10 models are awesome and a big thanks to SENA for hooking us up with them.  After testing them out for several months, we wouldn't ride without them now! UPDATE: We are now using the smaller SMH10R units and love them just as much as the SMH10's.  A big thanks to SENA for letting us be part of their Ambassador program.

Where do you live / ride?  We live in beautiful Northwestern Ontario Canada.

Thank you for tjhe info on "GPS" unit, that was a big question for me! As I feel not safe[fear of getting lost] without one.Question - money not being an issus, what would be [in your opinion] the best GPS unit to get? with realiblity, battery life, and ease of operation and visibility being key factors ?
Thank you for great experiance in going along with you on your rides - watching your videos.

cubbeezx said...

You're welcome! To tell you the truth, we haven't really tried any of the newer models, but I would highly recommend a Garmin. Seems to be the unit of choice! Ours has worked flawlessly for years. One of the new waterproof ones for motorcycles would be good. (not sure of the name) Or the one that replaced ours, the 62 series. I would imagine that would be good for just about anything, including hiking or hunting and good battery life. Probably not much help, but thanks for your question!

Dawger007 said...

thank you for answering.I did "google" search and Garmin comes up 9 times out of 10.!! Looking for a store that sells/handles them. Most stores here in winnipeg cater to fishing,so fishfinders are the norm.I see Canadian Tire have a few higher end GPS units, and Cabelas[they are expensive there]I am still looking......and I am thinking of bugging some people I know that go to the states often- for weekend get-aways,gotta be cheaper/more reasonable there.Just gotta choise a model.........and thats the problem,as I know nothing about them except what I can find on internet and thats more of an avertizing for them than anything else, thats why I thought of asking you,as you have one and use it and might be able to suggest something.I figure on spending 450 to 550 dollars as that seems to be the common price.
Thanks again and keep up the great work and videos !!!!

cubbeezx said...

lol! Actually, I just received a new Garmin 62S for Christmas from the in-laws.
We have bought from either Gps central or Gps City in Alberta online. Would recommend either one. Great service and good prices too! They may have US stores also, not too sure. Not sure what the price was (better not look lol) but they are usually very competitive if not the lowest price around. Check them out!

Anonymous said...

Just a curious question . How old are you guys ?

cubbeezx said...

Old! Some may even say as old as dirt? lol

Unknown said...

DO YOU MAKE THESE MOVIES FULL TIME TO POST TO IS OR DO YOU BOTH HAVE REGULAR DAYTIME JOBS TO GO TO

cubbeezx said...

We do it as a hobby, but does it really matter?

Unknown said...

i just got a 1991 yamaha big bear 350 4x4 is their any problems to look out for.

cubbeezx said...

We bought our Big Bear "broken" but since we've fixed it all up, it has been great. We haven't used it a lot, but the rides we've been on with it have been awesome! Just make sure you perform regular maintenance on it!

Unknown said...

i was going to buy a 86 honda like yours but the guy had it betup. how much was your grizzy i'm thing about buying one

cubbeezx said...

Our 2011 Grizzly was around $9500 CDN a couple of years ago.

Unknown said...

when are you going to have some new videos

cubbeezx said...

Just posted the 2 newest videos to the blog and just mentioned on Facebook that we're working on a new video right now. Hoping it will be finished in a couple of days. Takes us at least 10 hours of editing to get them ready to upload....stay tuned!

Anonymous said...

How many Atv`s Do you guys really have?? :D

cubbeezx said...

As of right now, we have 4 atv's. The two 2011 Yamaha's a 97 Big Bear and an 86 Honda.

Anonymous said...

Do you guys have 2 Hondas? Cuz In your film `Swamp thing` you have a hourmeter But In The film `return to the beaver pond` The honda doesent.... Just curious

cubbeezx said...

Good eye...at one point we did have 2 1986 Honda TRX's, however I gave one to a family member so now only have 1. You were looking at 2 different quads!

Hugo said...

Do you have stock tiers In the film 'swamp thing' on your Honda TRX 350 fourtax??

cubbeezx said...

Hugo, those are Mud Lights on the Honda, so no not stock.

Hugo said...

Are all your ATV's street legal??

cubbeezx said...

Yes, they are licensed. Some roads and highways though are restricted and you cannot ride on them.

hubzatving said...

i got a suggestion for ya, you should do a wheelie montage think that would be a really cool video.
great videos cubbeezx and ck!keep it up

cubbeezx said...

We have considered that and think we would have enough footage LOL. Thanks for the idea!

Unknown said...

Hi i am 13 and handicapped and i ride the same Atv as CK 2011 Yamaha Kodiak 450. I have 3700km on it I enjoy watching your videos

cubbeezx said...

Thanks Jesse, glad you enjoy the vids and nice ride you have there!

Unknown said...

thanks for responding do you still have your 2000 honda trx 350

cubbeezx said...

No, we found the 2000 Honda a new home about a year ago...still have the 1986 TRX350 though!

Mike from Ottawa, focusbingster@rogers.com said...

Thanks for all the neat videos you post. I am recently new to ATVing. I bought my first Polaris in September and then bought a second one in October, so my brother and I could go together. I would really like to get my wife interested too, but as of now, she says "nothing doing". I am sure, as soon as she tries it once, she will love it. Just by looking at your vids, this sport seems to be a great hobby for couples. Perhaps you or CK can offer some ideas to help me intice my wife to give it a try.

cubbeezx said...

Having your own quad to ride definitely for us works great. It's great to get out and have fun exploring the wilderness together. Maybe if your wife went once for a ride she would be hooked! Are there any other couples in your area that ride?
We pack "snacks" and turn it into a fun afternoon...who doesn't love snacks? LOL

Unknown said...

congrats! just wanted to ask u how often you change the belt on the 450

cubbeezx said...

Thanks Jesse! We have never changed the belt on the 450 or the 700. Yamaha has amazing belt life.

Unknown said...

what kind of tires do you use to groom your trails and how do u tie them together

cubbeezx said...

They aren't special tires..just what we could get our hands on. They are held together with bolts and big washers. They work pretty good!

Unknown said...

Hey guys my name is Jordan and i have watched most of your videos on youtube and i love you guys! I love ATVS and dirtbikes, they are my life. And it makes me want to go ride with you, but we live in Idaho. I bet that you would be really fun to ride with! Anyway, i am a big fan of you guys, and i would like to keep in contact, if thats ok with you? Got to go so, just remember that u guys are awesome!!

cubbeezx said...

Hi Jordan! Thanks for watching and being a fan. The Grizzly and Kodiak are great quads and we have tons of fun on them both. Nothing better than exploring the wilderness and glad you enjoy watching the vids!

Unknown said...

I want to buy a Grizzly 700. What do you think? It's a rezistant ATV?

cubbeezx said...

The Grizzly 700 is an awesome ATV, would highly recommend it. Great all around quad.

Unknown said...

How expensive are parts if brokes?

cubbeezx said...

Haven't had to buy too many and no...what we have are pretty reasonable!

Unknown said...

Thx a lot buddy.i will mentioned you in my video when i'll buy the ATV.

Unknown said...

Dogger
I enjoy watching your videos, what software do you use for editing? which video camera easier to edit. thanks keep up the good work

cubbeezx said...

Thanks! We use Final Cut Pro X on a mac for video editing. Doesn't really matter what camera we use...it's all about the editing process.

Unknown said...

Hey happy new year to you too! just wondered how many km you have put on the ATV's and out of curiosity do u like Honda as much as Yamaha

cubbeezx said...

We have about 4300 km's on the Yamaha's now. Yes, still think HOnda is a good brand...at the time we bought our quads the Honda didn't have all the features we wanted, so we chose Yamaha.

Unknown said...

Ya have a honda rubicon 500 as well and it is a great ATV better for work in my mind. but the yamaha has been pretty good to me how long have u had the 86 Honda 350 for?

cubbeezx said...

The Honda is definitely a tough work horse. We've had this one for about 5 years now...there was a time when we had 2 (1 purchased from my brother). I restored it and gave it back to him as a gift. He probably had that one for about 15 years..and still going!

Unknown said...

So do you like the 86 honda better then the 2000 honda you use to have

cubbeezx said...

The electric shift on the 2000 was nice and it was newer so a bit comfier ride. I think the 86 is tougher though..good for pulling trees out of the bush LOL

justme said...

Wonder if you can use 2whl drv with the tracks..like on a packed trail...or would that do it harm.. you helped me deside..i got a grizzly with tracks..love you're videos

justme said...

Thanx for great videos

justme said...

Wonder if you can drive that grizxly with tracks in 2 whl drv..on a packed trail..to save on gas.or will it do it harm..love your videos

cubbeezx said...

Glad you enjoy the videos. You can drive the Grizzly in 2 wheel drive when the tracks are on, but we do usually have it in 4 wheel drive. For us we are in deep snow and need the 4 wheel drive to make it through!

Unknown said...

hey Cubbee and Ck thinking of getting zilla's for the 450 what size are the tires on your 450?? and did you need to make any upgrades to it because of a loss of power or anything

cubbeezx said...

The Kodiak has 26X9X12 and 26X11X12 . We didn't do any shim mod on the Kodiak..it did lose a bit on the bottom end, but nothing too noticeable!

Unknown said...

thank you are the zilla's better in the snow than the stock tires and would the bigger tires wear out the belt quicker?

cubbeezx said...

The Zilla's make such a huge difference in summer and winter compared to the stock tires. Well worth the investment. We have around 3500km's with the zilla's on and no issues at all with the original belt.

Honda250 ireland said...

hi cubbeezx
i am from co.kerry ireland. i own a honda 250 2002. i love the videos.
the yamaha's are so cool there is no mud hole or creek too big or too small.

cubbeezx said...

Thanks! Glad you are enjoying the videos!

Unknown said...

hey Cubbe on the 450 would it be better to get 25 inch zillas or 26 inch

cubbeezx said...

26 Zilla's is what we have for the kOdiak 450 and no complaints here!

Unknown said...

Ok thanks

Garbie said...

Great Videos!!!!!! Curious for your opinion on the Tatou 4s. I'm in Thunder Bay about 300km east of you with the same terrain and snow conditions. Are the tracks really worth the expense? I am looking for something that is basically unstoppable in the snow. Speed isn't really a factor. The debate is to either get tracks or a utility snowmobile, bearcat, tundra, skandic, etc. I have done my homework on the brands of tracks and basically the camoplast seems to be by far the best product. My local dealer has offered such a good deal that its hard to pass up, but I hear mixed reviews of performance in snow.

cubbeezx said...

The tracks do turn the Grizz into a tank....good for going slow and plowing through deep snow. They do have their limits though...just posted pics on our facebook page..got stuck with them last week in the sugary snow. When you're stuck with the tracks, you are STUCK! The newer sleds with the longs tracks probably would stay up on the snow but we have older sleds that are useless in this deep stuff. The Grizz has power steering but it is REALLY hard to steer with them on. Not sure what brand you have, but thought I would mention it. If they're a good deal...Good Luck!

Unknown said...

I really like your side mirror on the Griz. It flips in nice for tight clearances. What kind is it?

Unknown said...

What brand is you side mirror on the Griz? I like the way it flips up for tight clearances.

cubbeezx said...

Not sure what brand, but it is a universal model from Rocky Mountain ATV. Hope that helps.

Unknown said...

Hey Cubbe and CK how long does it take you to upload your videos? You have inspired me to make a video so I did but it takes so long to upload I had to cancel it. How do you upload?

cubbeezx said...

Yes, the videos do take a long time to upload. We have pretty fast internet and a 20 minute video might take 5-6 hours. Maybe try making them short to start, 2 or 3 minutes..see how long that takes.

Unknown said...

I know ive seen you post what clutch mods you've done to your grizzly 700 but I didn't have one then. I have since purchased one and I would like to match the performance of yours. Did yours mods effect your top speed at all our efficiency that you could tell

cubbeezx said...

The only mod I did to the Grizzly clutch was to add a 1.5mm shim. It helped with bottom end when the bigger tires were isntalled, and yes I did lose a few mph on the top end, but not too bad. The next video out will show me cleaning the clutch and you will be able to see where the shims go, so stay tuned!

Unknown said...

Hey Cubbe and CK jesse here again have another question about tires! as you know i have a 450 like CK I will soon be purchasing new tires new Zillas do you think it would be better to go with 25inch or 26inch. and do the 26inch tires add ground clearance.

cubbeezx said...

We went with the 26" on the Kodiak, and no complaints. They help a bit with clearance, but the zilla lugs really help out in the mud and the snow. Hope that helps.

Unknown said...

Hey Cubbe and CK have a quick question for you guys if you want to buy a heavy duty belt for the Kodiak that you would last through snow plowing and riding what one would it be

cubbeezx said...

Hey Jesse, I would say buy OEM...our Yamaha original belts after 5000 km's were almost like brand new.

Unknown said...

thanks i am at the 5381 mark now still is running pretty good no tune ups yet good new vid

cubbeezx said...

We changed the Grizzly belt at 5000 km's...only because we had bought a new one for it...but after looking at the old one it was like new. We didn't change the Kodiak's as it too looked new. Way tougher than snowmobile belts!
Thanks for checking out the new vid!

Matt said...

Hey love the videos by the way I was just wondering how much were the Silas for the kodiak?? I would like to buy 26" for mine thanks

cubbeezx said...

Thanks very much for watching! The Grizzly got tires/rims and there were just over $1000 but that was about 3 years ago now. The Kodiak just got tires and I think they were around $600 or so....We love the Zilla's - great all around tire.

Unknown said...

Hey Cubbe and CK have a question for you on my Yamaha when you turn the choke on then turn it off the engine still sound like the choke is on I had to shut the ATV off for about a minute to get it to stop. Have you ever had this problem with the 450 and what do you think it is.

thanks

cubbeezx said...

Hi Jesse! No can't say we've had that problem with the 450 but sure sounds like your choke is sticking on....maybe the cable?

Unknown said...

Have enjoyed watching your outings and videos. Very nice locations. I live in Houston and would love having these kind of locations near me. So if its ok, I'll live vicariously through the both of you! :)

Also, your videos are well put together. Would you consider making a video or series of videos about how you put together your videos, a sort of video making tutorial? I would love learning that from someone who does such a great job with merging video shots, audio and themes.

cubbeezx said...

Hey Brent, thanks for watching the videos and you can come "virtual" riding with us anytime! Glad you enjoy them. Thanks for the video suggestion, we're always thinking about the riding videos, never really thought about any other kind, but might be cool to try your idea at some point. We're about 6 videos behind now, but with winter coming will be looking for some new material!

Schmidty said...

Hey Cubbeezx and CK, Greetings from Minnesota. I just got a Gopro Hero3 silver and I know you said something about having a micro attached to your gopro (I think you were having some trouble with it). Anyway, how did you do attach the microphone to the gopro with it in the case or how did you work that.
Really love the Snowmobiling videos, looking forward to seeing you get the cats out this winter :)

cubbeezx said...

Hey Schmidty! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoy the vids. We actually drilled a small hole in the case and then you can get an adapter from gopro (usb from gopro to mini jack) and then we have an external mic. Sounds much better than the stock gopro mic. This past summer though we have been using the SENA Bluetooth backpack that records our conversation..a lot easier to edit! Hope that helps and happy trails.

Unknown said...

hey cubbe and ck hows it going just bought a 54 inch plow for the 450 do you think I'll be okay pushing it what are your thoughts

cubbeezx said...

Hey Jesse, things are good. Just heading out to install Commander tracks on the Kodiak!
I think your 450 will be fine plowing snow...(depending on how deep it gets!) We've always said our Kodiak has good bottom end "grunt" LOL

Old Swed said...

Do you use skidplate in aluminum or do you only have original plastic Atv?

You make good ATV movies. That is how ATV should be used and not like a submarine.

cubbeezx said...

Hi! We only have the stock ATV skid plates. The aluminum ones are nice though. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoy the videos!

Unknown said...

hey cubbe nice new outlander they have a lot of power what are you going to do with the 700 and 450?

cubbeezx said...

Thanks! CK will probably drive the Grizzly and we'll keep the Kodiak as a spare.

Unknown said...

Hey cubbee i have heat demon grip warmers to have you ever found when you use your winch that they shut off and stop working I have that problem any suggestions ?

cubbeezx said...

Hey Jesse. Maybe your alternator doesn't have enough "juice" to run both at the same time. The winch's really use a lot of power! We actually haven't had to use our winch much since we installed the grips on the Grizz but will really keep an eye on it next time we do!

Unknown said...

hey cubbe today on the 450 i noticed that there is some kind of oil dripping near the rear of the ATV not sure what it is any suggestions?

cubbeezx said...

Hey Jesse, if you are somewhere cold it could be your breather line on your rear diff.

Unknown said...

yes its -35 up here. thanks. have you had that problem is it a big one to worry about

cubbeezx said...

Probably a good idea to take a look around, make sure nothing else leaking.

Anonymous said...

Hi,

Regarding mileage with tracks. Do you have some hint on what respective mileage you have with tracks on the Grizzly and Outlander (and Kodiac if so).

I realize, it's very much up to the riding conditions, but lets say doing "smooth couch-riding on more of hard packed snow/lake" versus "loose 10 inch snowy"... sort of

Best regards,
fnutt

cubbeezx said...

We haven't really bothered to check the gas mileage as we don't really travel too far. The tracks are geared down about 35% so imagine would use about 35% less gas. The speedometers are off so really hard to tell and for sure in deep snow they would use a lot more, but hard packed might not be so bad!

Unknown said...

hey cubbe around how much were the kimpex tracks for the 450??

cubbeezx said...

Tracks are around $3500-4000 for the ATV. Lets you use your ATV all year round though!

Unknown said...

when you got the grizzly 700 did they give you an option to put the ignition for the key on the left or right side?.

cubbeezx said...

No option Jesse for the key...it came on the right and the shifter on the left

Unknown said...

hey cubbe how did you fix the gurgling gas problem on the 450?? because mine just started to do that

thanks

cubbeezx said...

Hey Jesse, We blew out the gas vent line hose with an air compressor and it stopped. Must have been some dirt blocking the vent line!

Anonymous said...

Hi, I am a huge fan of your videos. I have one question: Have you ever considered to buy a snow plow your your Atv's?

cubbeezx said...

Thanks for checking out the videos! We actually have a couple of older plows for the Honda but find by the end of the winter our snow is too deep to be able to push the snow high enough.

Unknown said...

Hi again. Quick question: why don't you guys ever have more videos with your friends? (Ricky Bobby, Grassman, and drifter)

cubbeezx said...

Hi Johan, they don't get out riding in the winter, but hoping to get out with them this summer. Tried hooking up a few times, but everyone is busy when summer first starts!

Unknown said...

Hi there, how do you guys keep your quads so clean? is there a special technique?

cubbeezx said...

Hi Johan, we made a video showing how we detail our ATV's. Helps to have a pressure washer too to get rid of the big stuff! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXqRapfszU8

Unknown said...

hey cubbe I noticed there is a noise coming from the right front suspension when you teeter the atv back and fourth on the kodiak what could that be

cubbeezx said...

HI Jesse S. Sometimes the Kodiak develops a "squeak" in the front end. After CK drives through some water it goes away...gets dry I guess!

Anonymous said...

Hi cubbeezx. I found your blog through your youtube videos, while exploring the idea of getting an ATV. You inspired me to start my own blog. Looking forward to getting it going. Unknown said...

Hey question out of curiosity how many Km do you think you have on the 86 Honda? And do you plan on taking it for a ride soon would love to see it in the video again!

cubbeezx said...

Hi Jesse S. Not sure how many KM's on the old Honda...we put a few on but when we got it we think it had THOUSANDS! Right now the battery is dead but hope to get it out in the spring again.

Unknown said...

Great Videos! I contacted you back in April and asked you some questions.I since have bought quads for my wife and I and I have recently bought Tatou 4s tracks for my quad. Do you ride them in 4 wheel all the time ? do you ride them it 2 wheel drive? I have a 750 king quad with power steering and find in close slow trails steering is very hard. But in two wheel drive it is easier to steer? Any thoughts?

cubbeezx said...

Hey Jeff. Congrats on the quads and tracks! We find that the Grizzly is very hard to steer with the tracks on. The Can Am power steering is better ( in our opinion ) and has different settings so we can "crank up" the power steering and it makes the tracks easier to steer. They are easier to steer in 2 wheel drive and if you are driving on packed trails 2 wheel drive is probably just fine. In the deep sugary snow though we use 4 wheel drive. We did find that the Grizzly with the Commander Tracks was a bit easier to steer than when the Tatou's were on it.

Unknown said...

How many km's on the grizzly.

cubbeezx said...

Not sure exactly but over 7500 km's

redneck wheeler said...

Nice little video I'm sure you'll figure out how to utilize that to get some amazing shots

cubbeezx said...

Thanks! Hoping to get some cool ATV riding footage this summer.

redneck wheeler said...

All things aside even though you deal with Kimpex, if someone were to ask you which set of tracks to buy , which ones do you prefer better for all around use ,the camoplast or the commanders, and why would that be, since you had both on your grizzly

cubbeezx said...

They are both very similar and there is nothing wrong with the Camoplast Tracks. We found that the Commander's were a bit easier to steer on the Grizzly (maybe because they are wider) and have longer lugs. The snow also doesn't seem to stick to them as much. Hope that helps.

Unknown said...

hi love your vidios im from new-brunswick canada just got 2015 grizzly 700 i have same hand gard as you and i see you have mirrors on the end i was looking to by some on ebay just wanted to no if they work well or to small and your zilla tires do i have to put clutch kit or that 1.5mm chime or stock will work whit no problem thanks .

cubbeezx said...

Hi! Congratulations on your new Grizzly! The mirrors are pretty small but if the guy behind you has lights on you can at least tell they are still coming. When we put the 27" Zilla's on the Grizzly we lost a bit of the bottom end so the 1.5mm was cheap and easy to do. That is all we did, and been working ok. Did lose a bit of top end but it was worth it.

Unknown said...

Hi cubeezx. I have a question, what do you use low gear for?

cubbeezx said...

We don't use low gear often...but we do use it "when the going gets tough". If you need more power because your stuck, or towing low gear gives you more bottom end grunt.

Anonymous said...

You are the best

cubbeezx said...

Thanks Hunter

Anonymous said...

How much reduction in top speed (gear-down ratio) do you get with the tracks on the Outlander?
